Urban Legend Essay
Urban legends are in life and literature. They are used to describe the things that can't be described. Three urban legends are that Dolphus Raymond drinks whiskey, that it is unlucky to touch the Radley tree, and Boo Radley eats rodents

The first urban legend that Dolphus Raymond drinks whiskey out of a bag. Everyone avoids him because they think he's a drunk. Then Jem, Dill, and Scout finds out that he is actually drinking coke. Dill tastes it and he said it was coke. This proves that Dolphus is not a drunk.

The second urban legend is that it is unlucky to touch the Radley tree. The only reason people say that is because Boo Radley lives there. If anyone else lived there, it would not be unlucky. Scout has touched that tree and she has had good luck.

The last urban legend is that Boo Radley eats rodents. That is not true. He does not come out his house, so it would be impossible to do that. Also Boo Radley is not a bad guy; he saved Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell. Also he is human, humans do not eat rodents.

There were many urban legends in the book To Kill a Mockingird. Urban Legends are used to scare people. They are also used to keep people from doing something. For instance, monsters under the bed is used to keep children from getting out of bed at night. Slenderman is to keep kids from going into the forest and getting lost. Bigfoot is also used for that reason. The thing is though, Bigfoot is real.

Family Memoir

They were like giant mountains whose peaks were touching the sky. It was my opportunity. There I went moving as fast as I could. Then I was up. It was double the size of me but I had been waiting for this moment for several years. I understood what I had to do. It was a wave. A very specific one. It was called Cloudbreak. It was a world renowned wave in Fiji. The Volcom Fiji Pro is held there annually. I felt the adrenaline rushing through my system. I stood up. I felt the wind going through my long hair. I could not believe I was here. My dad had decided that it was the year for me to go, so I took the opportunity. It was very generous and nice of him to take me. This was the start of a long lasting tradition.
Let's go back several years. I first met my dad when I was born. I was crying and he held me. I remember this very vividly. I could see the plain rooms grey door and out the window New York City. If we go forward three or so years, I remember my dad getting home at eleven o'clock every night because we were living in Connecticut but his work was in New York. I would wait up all night for him and he would give me a big hug. Then he would say that I would have to go to bed. At the time we were living in my grandfather's house that has a lot of good hiding places for a kid. I would go to my bed. When my parents left, I would sprint out quickly. After that, I would wait for them to pass while hiding behind a chair. Also, I would sprint into my baby sisters room and wake her up to create a distraction. Then I would sprint down and around the stairs. Quietly, I would tip toe through the long hallway. That was the hard part because my grandfather would be right there. So I would run into the tv room and hide behind the pool table. Lastly, I would hide behind the couch and watch 24 with my grandfather. Soon enough my dad would walk down, realize I had used "the method" and scoop me up with a big hug and bring me back to bed.
Now I am four years old and living in California. We are renting a house in Brentwood. My dad says that he wants to teach me to surf. So we drive to Santa Barbara and to my grandparents on my dads sides house. They live in Hope Ranch and there is an awesome beach there. So we quickly get the key card and rush down there. Then, we would go down a long road and then we would get to the beach. It would usually be as hot as heck on the beach so we would rush down into the water.
Surfing has played a huge part in my relationship with my dad. Every time he takes me surfing I have a good time. Even if the waves are terrible. Now that he has taught me to be a better surfer than him, I really have a lot of fun. In conclusion, my dad has a huge part in my life.

SLF ESSAY

SLF Essay

Serving, leading, and flourishing are three major parts of the St. Matthews society. As a student, I have found ways to obey those rules of thumb. When I reflect on my years at St.Matthews, I can see many things that people at the School have taught me that will help my future self.

First of all, I serve. Over the summer, my dad and I are going to do something great for someone else. We will be an advisor to them and tell them that school is very important and can set you in a good path if you work hard. Since he or she will not have parents to talk to their problems about, we will be their go-to person when they need to talk. Another way that I serve is through OPCC (Ocean Park Community Center). That organization is such an amazing place, and every time I go there, I feel like I am really making a difference in someone's life. The feeling of making a difference is what has kept me going back there.

Also, I have the incentive of a leader. Every day of my life since I was 2 years and 9 months old has been spent as a leader. My now 10 year old sibling Riley has looked up to me in many ways. First, she always loves to play sports with me. Since I beat her every time we play soccer, she is always hoping to learn a new move or skill set from me. Also, she has gotten her wild imagination from me. No matter if it is something silly or if it is genius, she always seems to love it. Riley looks up to me to see if the idea is really possible, and we always try it. Once, I made the mistake of telling her the perfect prank. When I returned home from Lacrosse that night I noticed my light on and Riley in my room. I sprinted in, but it was too late. She had played the perfect prank on me. I have not quite figured out how I can help Ella, at age 3, and Fin, at age 1, with their lives yet, but I am destined to help them somehow.

Lastly, I have flourished in many areas. If it is on the field, or at school, I seem to know what I am doing. I would like to thank my parents for this attribute. Since Day One, they taught me how to play sports and have a good work ethic. At home, I work very hard at lacrosse for 30 minutes a day everyday if I do not have practice. I have a goal and a rebounder in my backyard. I will go and pass it off the rebounder and shoot. Other times, I do drills that involve a lot of exercise. Off the field at home I work very hard too. My Mom and Dad push me very hard to get good grades. They tell me that it is very important to work hard because it will pay off someday. I like to think that to follow your dreams, you must first make them a possible reality. If you want fancy cars and a good job, you must work very hard. You must make whoever is looking over you impressed. The hardest thing in life is going the extra mile.

In my 13 years on this planet I have found that it is serving, leading, and flourishing that makes a good human being. No matter where you are or what situation your in, these traits with help you do better. If it means going the extra mile on an assignment, do it. Or if it means helping and orphan child get there life straight, do it. It is the simplest things in life that get you the furthest.

Night Response

Did the Jews know what was going to happen to them?
In my opinion, the Jews did not know what was going to happen to them. When the

women kept saying,"fire, I see fire!" They had no idea that she meant. She meant that they were going to get gassed and burned in the crematorium. In conclusion, the Jews had no idea what was going to happen to them.

 Where I'm from poem

I'm from the tucked in shirts,
from the navy, white, or black socks,
I'm from the falcon jackets,
whose pride shows off.

I'm from the Ipads,
from the 3D printers,
I'm from the Imacs,
where many papers are written.

In the gym there are banners,
they have the championships and the sportsmanships.

I'm from those places,
that show courageous strength,
in that courage is my school.
Steinbeck Comparative Essay

The Pearl and OMAM Comparative Essay

In the novels The Pearl and Of Mice and Men are both written by John Steinbeck, so there are many similarities throughout the novels. The six characters that prove this are Lennie and Coyotito, George and Kino, and Curley's wife and the doctor. My argument is that the author John Steinbeck's novels have the same style of writing, so the characters endings turn out alike.

Coyotito and Lennie's childlike curiosity gets them into trouble. First, their childlike curiosity gives them no self control. Two examples of this is when Coyotitio screams when Kino is about to kill the trackers. The trackers think that it is a coyote so they shoot where they hear the scream. This gets Coyotito's top of the head shot off. The other example is when Lennie gets scared when he's feeling Curley's wife's soft hair so he holds on to it with his strong hand. This cause her to scream so he puts his hand over her mouth and shakes her to make her stop screaming. This ends up snapping her neck. Next, Coyotito and Lennie both get shot in the head. It is there guardians fault because in Lennie's case George was the one to shoot him. But, in Coyotito's case it was Kino's fault because he could have not made the decision to go on the long trek to the capital to sell his pearl. A quote that proves this is made when George is about to shoot Lennie. The quote is this"The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand stedied. He pulled the trigger.(pg 106)" This shot kills Lennie almost instantly and gets him out of trouble with Curley. After they depend on their guardians, their guardians are the ones to kill them.

Kino and George are relied on throughout both of the novels. An example of Kino and George being relied on is when Kino has to get the scorpion away from Coyotito. Even though Coyotito gets bit by the scorpion it was because Coyotito hits the scorpion down. Kino then kills it. An example for George is when he has to keep Lennie's work card. Lennie thought that he had put it in his pocket. George told him that he would never let him carry his own work card. This was smart because Lennie would have certainly lost it. Kino and George are also held account for the killing or the cause of the people they look afters death. Kino could have decided to sell the pearl there and then but instead he decided to go to the capital. He is followed by trackers who end up Killing Coyotito. George literally kills Lennie. He takes Carlson's luger and shoots him in the back of the head. Lennie dies without feeling a thing. A qoute from the book that shows there relied on is this "Get him Lennie, Get him!(pg 64)" This shows that George had to make the decision for him. In conclusion, Kino and George had to make decisions quickly, so some of the outcomes would not be good.

The doctor and Curley's wife commit plenty of racist actions throughout the book. First, They both act superior to people of another race. The doctor would not let Kino in even though Coyotito needed help. He says that he has a more important patient to tend to that needs his help badly. Curley's wife tells Crooks that he could have him hung for doing nothing. The sad part is that that is the truth. So Crooks goes into a yes mode. Everything that Curley's wife says Crooks responds yes ma'am. She acts superior to him. Doctor and Curley's wife also have other problems. They are both miserable with their lives. Each of them that was denied by others. The doctors wife died when they were living in Paris so he had to move to La Plaz. If his wife had not died they would still be living in Paris. He refers to this many times throughout the book. But, when Curley's wife was around fifteen or sixteen she was offered to go to Hollywood. She was really happy to go. Her mother thought otherwise though. Her mother denied the request. This made Curley's wife very mad. This comes up once in the book and she tells it to Lennie. He does not understand. A quote that proves that they are racist is when Coyotito needs a doctor and gets denied."Have I nothing better to do then cure insect bites for little indians? I am a doctor not a veterinarian.(pg 11)"As their lives have progressed, both of them could of had better lives.

John Steinbecks novels have similarities, so the books were very alike. The childlike curiosity, the decision making, and the racism took its toll at the end of the book. For Coyotito and Lennie, it resulted in their deaths. For Kino and George, it caused them depression. For the doctor and Curley's wife, it resulted in a life with endless misery and death. These characters all did something that they wish they could have changed throughout the book. They all could of had normal lives and lived happily. But instead they stretched to far for only a little book of light. This book teaches us to be happy with are own life and help those who don't know how to. The books The Pearl and Of Mice of Men had a very good lesson in the end.

Historical Event Memoir
Dylan Vincent

Historical Event

A historical event that I lived through was the stock market crash in 2008. Many people lost their jobs and other important assets. It put the nation into shock. Dow Jones Industrial Average hit an all time high at $14,164.43 on October 9, 2009. 18 months later it fell 50% to 6,594.44 on March 9, 2009. This was the second biggest drop in the history of the stock market. The first was the Great Depression; the stale market had a 90% drop in took 3 years opposed to the 18 month it took during the 2008 crash. A lot of people lost their houses and became homeless. Also, people who had invested in that time period lost a ton of money. This luckily did not affect my family. It actually helped my family a lot. My dad, a stock broker, noticed that the market was going to go up. So he invested in stocks that looked like they were going to go up a lot. Also, he bought a couple of apartment buildings. Mt view of this is that it was good depending on what industry you worked in. If you were an investor who might have seen it as an opportunity you were in good hands, but if you had invested right before, you were screwed. In conclusion, the stock market crash of 2008 ruined a lot of people's lives.
